Why Fall Is One of the Best Times for Family Photos in Oklahoma
Jul 23 2026 | By: Keely Nicole Photography
If you're thinking about scheduling family photography in OKC, fall is hands down one of my favorite times of year.
There's just something about it.
The evenings are cooler, everyone is finally ready to be outside again, and life feels like it slows down just enough to soak in these little moments with your family. It also happens to be one of the prettiest times of year here in Oklahoma, which definitely doesn't hurt.
Cooler Evenings Make Happier Families
As beautiful as summer sessions can be, Oklahoma heat is no joke.
By the time fall rolls around, everyone seems to breathe a little easier. Parents aren't worrying about sweaty kids or melting makeup, and little ones are usually much happier running around outside without the heat wearing them out.
That means less stress for you and more time for us to focus on what really matters like playing and laughing together, and capturing the authentic moments that feel like your family.
The Light Is Absolutely Beautiful
One of my favorite things about fall sessions is the light.
During the summer, golden hour doesn't happen until pretty late in the evening, which isn't always ideal if you have toddlers who are getting close to bedtime.
In the fall, that same beautiful golden light shows up much earlier. Your kids are usually happier, everyone has a little more energy, and we still get that warm, glowy look that makes outdoor family photos so timeless.
It's honestly the best of both worlds.
Fall Outfits Are So Much Fun
I also think fall is the easiest season to dress for.
Soft sweaters, flowy dresses, boots, lightweight layers, and cozy textures photograph beautifully without feeling like you're trying too hard.
I usually recommend sticking with warm, earthy colors like cream, olive, rust, camel, dusty blue, or soft burgundy. They work so well with Oklahoma's fall scenery and help create a gallery that feels timeless instead of trendy.
And remember, you don't have to match. Coordinating colors almost always photographs better than everyone wearing the exact same thing.
You'll Be Ready for the Holidays
This is probably the biggest reason families book fall sessions every year.
Holiday cards sneak up faster than we think. Grandparents are asking for updated photos, and suddenly you're wishing you'd planned family pictures months ago.
Scheduling your session in the fall gives you plenty of time to enjoy your gallery before the holiday rush begins. No last-minute scrambling or wondering if your photos will be ready in time.
These Seasons Don't Last Very Long
This is the part I always come back to.
Your kids are changing in ways you probably don't even notice until you look back at old photos. The missing teeth, the way your toddler reaches for your hand, the silly laughs, the way everyone fits together right now...Those little things change so quickly.
Family photos aren't really about getting everyone to smile at the camera. They're about remembering what life felt like during this season, because one day it will look completely different.
And I think that's pretty special.
Let's Plan Your Fall Session
Fall is one of the busiest times of year, and my calendar usually fills up quickly.
If you've been thinking about updating your family photos, I'd love to help you create a session that feels relaxed, fun, and true to your family. If you're looking for family photography OKC families come back to year after year, I'd be honored to help tell your story.
I can't wait to meet your crew and capture this season before it becomes the next memory. 🤍
